Study of cobalt(II)‐chitosan coordination polymer and its catalytic activity and selectivity for vinyl monomer polymerization

Abstract: A cobalt(II)‐chitosan coordination polymer has been prepared by soaking a chitosan film in CoCl2 aqueous solution. The results have been investigated by means of X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier Transform infrared FT‐IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis and electrical conductivity measurements. The XPS and FT‐IR spectra reveal that the chitosan coordinated with cobalt(II) through both oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the chitosan chain. The XPS results show that the coordination polymer possess the sam… Show more

“…According to the literature, N 1s and O 1s binding energies of chitosan were appeared in 399.4 and 532.2 eV, respectively. 53 Binding energies of N 1s and O 1s were found to be higher than same peaks in chitosan. 53 These upward shifts indicated decreasing electron density around O and N due to electron draining to cobalt.…”

“…Zeta potential measurements were performed to determine the surface charge of PEM‐MSNPs on metal coordination. Whereas the zeta potential values of Mn 2+ @PEM‐MSNPs (+6.14 mV) and Fe 2+ @PEM‐MSNPs (+13.3 mV) were slightly positive, the zeta potential of Co 2+ @PEM‐MSNPs was −21 mV (Figure S2), indicating that the Mn 2+ and Fe 2+ ions are probably coordinated to the carboxylic acid units of hyaluronic acid and Co 2+ ions are mostly coordinated through both oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the chitosan structure …”

“…Whereas the zeta potential values of Mn 2 + @PEM-MSNPs (+ 6.14 mV) and Fe 2 + @PEM-MSNPs (+ 13.3 mV) were slightly positive, the zeta potential of Co 2 + @PEM-MSNPs was À 21 mV ( Figure S2), indicating that the Mn 2 + and Fe 2 + ions are probably coordinated to the carboxylic acid units of hyaluronic acid and Co 2 + ions are mostly coordinated through both oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the chitosan structure. [12] To determine the metal content of nanocatalysts, ICP-MS measurements were performed and the results are summarized in Table S1. It is important to note that the results are reported the average of three replicate measurements.…”

“…Although the positions of oxygen-containing functional groups before and aer adsorption had not switched, the competitiveness of C-OH and C-O-C were reduced, indicating that C-OH and C-O-C groups were likely to be involved in the adsorption. 43 3.5.2. FT-IR.…”
