In this study, the performance and exhaust emission values in a four-stroke, four-cylinder turbocharged Diesel engine fueled with ethanol-diesel fuel blends (10% and 15% in volume) were investigated by using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) modeling. The actual data derived from engine test measurements was applied in model training, crossvalidation, and testing. To train the network, fuel injection pressures, throttle positions, engine speed, and ethanol fuel blend ratios were used as input layer in the network. The outputs are the engine performance values (engine torque, power, brake mean effective pressure, and specific fuel consumption) and exhaust emissions (SO2, CO2, NOx, and smoke level (N%)) which were measured in the experiments.The back-propagation learning algorithm with three different variants, a single layer, and logistic sigmoid transfer function (log-sig) was used in the network. By using the weights of the network, formulations were given for each output. The network for test data yielded the R 2 values of 0.999 and the mean % errors for test data are smaller than 3.5% for the performance and 8% for the emissions.

Several studies on ethanol as a biofuel have been comprehensively carried out. Today, a growing interest in longer chain alcohols has emerged due to their favourable physical and thermodynamic properties. Butanol or butyl alcohol with 4-carbon structure (C4H9OH) is a more promising biofuel as it outweighs methanol and ethanol in several ways. The production cost of butanol has been gradually reduced, and rapid progress in the development of its production technology has allowed butanol to be produced more effectively. However, studies on the effect of butanol on gasoline or spark ignition (SI) engines are not as comprehensive as the abundant research of ethanol. This paper highlights recent novelty and contribution of butanol addition in SI engine. Results of new approaches on the engine’s performance, combustion and emission characteristics are summarised. Reviews from this paper suggest that there are some gaps in the addition of butanol found in the literature. Thus, several encounters and forthcoming research directions are outlined in the final section of this review article, highlighting several possible contributions that have not yet been carried out using butanol as a biofuel in a gasoline engine.

An increase of needs for replacement of fossil fuels, and for mitigation of Carbon Dioxide emissions generated from fossil fuels inspires the search for new fuels based on renewable biological resources. It would be convenient if the biological component of the fuel required as little as possible conversion operations in the production. The obvious response is an attempt to use unconverted, neat plant oils as a fuel for Diesel engines. The present paper is devoted to the experimental studies of the combustion process of neat rapeseed oil, and its mixtures with gasoline and ethanol as additional components of the mixtures. The investigation of combustion was carried out in a fixed volume combustion chamber equipped with a Common Rail injection system. It is shown that the instant of ignition, as well as time-dependence of heat emanation, are strongly dependent upon mixture composition. The results enable the design of mixture compositions that could serve as commercial fuel for Diesel engines. Such fuels are expected to fulfill the requirements for the sustainability of road transport.
