Study of Preparation and Properties of Fire-Retardant Melamine Formaldehyde Resin Foam

Abstract: Melamine formaldehyde (MF) foam is a kind of fire-retardant material, which has many excellent properties. In this paper, the effect of foaming agent on foam-cell structure of MF foam was discussed, along with the compressive property, the water absorption and its thermo gravimetric behavior as well as its fire-retardant property behaved by limited oxygen index (LOI). Through the analysis of different factors affected on MF foam and its properties we hope to get practical products with good properties. Keyword… Show more

“…As a type of intrinsically flame‐retardant foam, MF foam shows obvious advantages in terms of flame‐retardant property over conventional polymer foams, such as PU, polystyrene, polyethylene and polypropylene, which are highly flammable . The flame retardancy of MF foam results from its unique chemical composition and decomposition process . That is, MF foam contains a considerable amount of melamine and therefore it can quickly produce a great deal of nitrogen‐containing gases upon igniting, which dilute the concentration of oxygen and flammable volatiles, thus effectively suppressing the combustion process.…”

“…Melamine‐formaldehyde foam (MF) is prepared through the emulsion and foaming of melamine‐formaldehyde resin . This kind of thermalset foam has a high open‐cell ratio over 90% and three‐dimensional network connected by melamine‐formaldehyde resin fibers with length‐diameter ratio of 10 to 20.…”

“…This kind of thermalset foam has a high open‐cell ratio over 90% and three‐dimensional network connected by melamine‐formaldehyde resin fibers with length‐diameter ratio of 10 to 20. This foam possesses many advantages such as excellent sound absorption, high adsorption to various solvents, and efficient thermal insulation property . The most outstanding advantage of MF is its intrinsic flame resistance .…”
