Study of processing parameters in fused deposition modeling based on mechanical properties of acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene filament

Abstract: Four processing parameters, layer thickness, printing speed, raster angle, and building orientation were investigated in terms of their effects on mechanical properties, surface quality, and microstructure of acrylonitrilebutadiene-styrene (ABS) samples in fused deposition modeling (FDM) by orthogonal experiments. The results show that both the building orientation and the printing layer thickness have a great influence on the mechanical properties of ABS specimens. When the layer thickness is 0.1 mm, samples … Show more

“…In these processes, to make three‐dimensional (3D) objects, the final parts are constructed by joining materials layer by layer. Recently, numerous researches have been conducted on AM processes; their main purpose was to control the processes and improve the materials properties . The birth of AM technology backs to 1988 when the first stereolithography machine was introduced.…”

“…3D printing (3DP), also known as additive manufacturing, has been widely used in the field of soft robots, food, tissues and so on, due to its simple principle, design flexibility and low cost . Among many 3DP technologies, fused deposition modeling (FDM) (the most commonly used 3DP technology) deposits semi‐molten feedstock filaments on a build platform layer by layer to build a 3D object. The materials used are mainly thermoplastic polymer materials such as polylactic acid, polyamide, acrylonitrile‐butadiene‐styrene (ABS) etc.…”

“…Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) resins have attracted considerable attention due to their superior mechanical properties [1], heat resistance [2], chemical resistance [3], recyclability [4][5][6] and ease of processing [7,8], and are widely used in telecommunications, automotive industry, consumer markets and business machines [9,10]. However, ABS is easily excited by the heat [11,12], light [13][14][15], oxygen [16,17] and other conditions during its processing [18,19], leading to aging degradations of the material.…”
