Study of RCS of complex target: Experimental measurements and Gaussian beam summation method

Abstract: International audienceThis paper presents a numerical and experimental study of RCS of canonical and complex targets using Gaussian Beam Summation (GBS) method. The purposed GBS method has several advantages over ray method, mainly on caustic problem. To test and evaluate the performance of the chosen method, we start the analysis of the RCS using GBS, the asymptotic models Physical Optic (PO), Geometrical Theory of Diffraction (GTD) and the rigorous Method of Moment (MoM). Then, we show the experimental valid… Show more

“…The summation of Gaussian beams allows solving some critical points of the asymptotic ray methods such as the problems related to the evaluation of wave field in singular areas. In addition, the Gaussian beams summation method offers a solution to overcome the caustics problem [3], [4], [13]- [15].…”

“…Then, after the visibility test, the scattering field integral from each visible triangular is calculated by GBS and GBL techniques. On the other hand, the work in [6], [7] show that when the diffraction contributions are accounted, the GBS+GTD method gives an accurate qualitative representation of the RCS variation for all observation angles. Therefore, to consider the edge diffraction contribution, we have chosen to combine the GBS and GBL with the physical theory of diffraction (PTD) method [2].…”

“…In the previous works [20–23], both GBS and GBL techniques are applied for the simulation of canonical and modified target RCS. It was found that the purposed composite GBS/GBL + PTD provide an accurate representation of the scattered field.…”

“…The GBS has been formulated for the scattering in different configurations such as the diffraction by a half plane, impedance wedge [24, 25] or by a flat plate [20–22]. These studies [20–22, 24, 25] demonstrate that the summation of GB allows overcoming some critical of the asymptotic models related to the caustics and the evaluation of the wave field in singular areas. To our knowledge, the first application of the GBS technique for the scattering by a modified target is presented in [23].…”
