Study of the full-service and low-cost carriers network configuration

Abstract: Abstract:Purpose: The network strategies used by airline carriers have been a recurring subject in air transport research. The aim of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the different operational characteristics of the airline and its route network configuration.Design/methodology/approach: The two main airline carrier typologies -Full-Service and Low-Cost carriers -are analysed using empirical models developed on complex network research relating them to the business model of the airlines.Fi… Show more

“…The global air transport network is another example where the application of complex network theory has greatly advanced the understanding of network dynamics and has promoted the study of vulnerability [34][35][36][37]42]. Maritime and air transport networks are parallel in many ways.…”

“…The point-to-point network strategy is another fundamental pillar of the LCC business model. Lordan (2014) and Cento (2009) argue that this network system allows the carriers to maximize aircraft utilization and to reduce delays compared to the hub and spoke networks. We acknowledge that Ryanair has started to sell selected indirect connections from 2017 where passengers can be routed via Bergamo, Rome or Porto.…”

“…In the view of Gillen and Lall (2004), the majority of LCCs provide short-haul point-to-point services, which allows aircraft to have more take-offs and landings thereby spending less time on the ground. Lordan (2014) pointed out that point-to-point (PP) networks are designed for a lower probability of delays, lower demand for personnel, and more economical aircraft turn-a-round times. Lordan (2014) goes on to explain that a point-to-point (PP) system attracts many LCCs due to a substantial cost reduction in the network configuration.…”
