Study of the Geo-Ecological State of Groundwater of Metropolitan Areas under the Conditions of Intensive Contamination Thereof

Abstract: The paper presents the analysis of the geo-ecological state of groundwater within an urban territory on the example of Saint Petersburg. The paper considers two key sites, characterized by different levels of contamination of the underground environment (Primorsky and Krasnogvardeisky districts of Saint Petersburg) and provides an assessment of the main natural and man-made sources of the groundwater contamination within the territory of the selected districts. The composition of groundwater was studied in the… Show more

“…The Redkinskiy horizon is represented by sandstones and siltstones with a thickness of 10-30 m, as well as by claystone-like clays and siltstones with a thickness of at most 15 m. The Kotlin deposits in the lower sub-formation are represented by sandstones and siltstones, and, in the upper sub-formation, by clays with rare sandstone interlayers. The thickness of this layer in some places reaches 150 m, but the surface of the Vendian complex is strongly eroded and varies greatly [35].…”

“…It is impossible to increase the budget without advanced me thods of mining at hand. Extraction of minerals is a complex process implemented using various methods and machines [2][3][4][5][6]. Efficiency of blasting as the most widely used method in mineral mining largely depends on drilling equipment and tools [4,7].…”

“…In addition to timely diagnostics of pipeline faults, it is necessary to conduct timely hydrogeological monitoring of underground water in cities since, if there are breaches in urban communications, ground water is subject to negative impacts. A study of the geoecological state of underground water in the city territory was carried out by a team of young scientists, whose research results were presented in a series of works [23][24][25][26]. The impact of microbial activity in the underground space including metro tunnels, utility networks, deep mines, tailing dumps, infrastructure with shallow and deep foundations was studied [27].…”
