Study of the Initial Stages of Anodic Oxidation of Polycrystalline Silver in  KOH  Solutions

Abstract: Growth of the anodic Ag2O film on a polycrystalline silver disk electrode in 1 mol dm−3KOH solution at ambient temperature has been examined using a variety of electrochemical techniques. On the basis of the experimental results, a solid‐state model of silver electrode covered by a thin semiconductor film with a finite ionic conductivity has been proposed. It has been found that under potentiostatic control, thickness of the oxide film adjusts very quickly to the hydrodynamic conditions by a deposition/dis… Show more

“…[ 13,38,40 ] Cyclic voltammograms (CVs) in O 2 -saturated 0.1 M KOH electrolyte were also used to reveal the ORR activity of the as-prepared samples in Figure 3 c. In the CV for pure Ag NWs, characteristic oxidation peaks appear between 1.067 and 1.467 V, corresponding to Ag 2 O monolayer, AgOH bulk, and Ag 2 O bulk formation, respectively. [ 44,45 ] The reduction of silver oxide is observed to be reversible on the negative scan, at 1.087 V. In the case of the AgPd-1 NTs, the oxide reduction peak of Ag is shifted left, which may be due to the alloy layer on the surface. The same trend in the shift continues with an increasing ratio of Pd in the composite.…”

“…The A2 peak (200 mV vs. Ag/AgCl 4H M KCl) has been given various interpretations. Hampel and Tomkiewicz [21] attributed the A2 peak to the the "initial stages of oxidation". Hampson [22] explained the A2 peak as the preferential oxidation of surface atoms of low coordination numbers.…”

“…The strongly appeared peaks (b) and (c) were assigned to the formation of the bulk phases of AgOH and Ag 2 O, and the cathodic peaks were assigned to the reduction of Ag 2 O back to metallic silver. 30 It is known that the electrochemical surface area (ECSA) could reveal the degree of metal utilization in the electrode material. Therefore, these results imply a better utilization of the Ag on the surface of the GO-C 2 -Ag with the assistance of smaller size of AgNPs.…”
