Study of the isothermal bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate by differential scanning calorimetry

Abstract: S U M M A R Y :Course and kinetics of the isothermal bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate were studied by differential scanning calorimetry. The initiator used was 2,2'-azoisobutyronitrile. The polymerization was investigated at temperatures between 70 and 90°C at constant initiator concentration, 5,2.10-2 mol d~n -~. The heat of polymerization at 7OoC is -52,3 kJ/mol (-12,5 kcal/mol) and decreases, i.e. becomes more negative, with increasing temperature. Initial rate constants for the polymerization wer… Show more

“…Conversion at different reaction times were calculated from the area between the curve and the baseline, which was obtained by back extrapolation of the straight line, recorded after the end of the polymerization reaction [32,33]. The experimental heat of polymerization is with less than 10% consistent with the literature (Ϫ67.5 to Ϫ70 kJ mol Ϫ1 , [26]).…”

“…The polymerization enthalpies AHp (Table 1) have been calculated from the areas under the DSC curves, after correcting for the residual monomer content. The values of AHp are between -55 and -58 kJ/mol, similar to those for other methacrylic monomers [4][5][6][7][8]. No temperature dependence of the polymerization enthalpies in the temperature range 348-373 K has been observed.…”

“…The aim was to determine the influence of the size and the position of alkyl substituents in pendent aryl groups of the monomer molecule on kinetic parameters. The present investigation is an extension of this work using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), which has proved to be convenient for studying the polymerization of vinyl monomers [3][4][5][6][7][8]. The rate of polymerization is determined directly, continuously and even in a gel or solid state [3].…”

“…Two other phases of the polymerization, which can also be considered as the onset of the gel effect, can easily be obtained from the DSC curves. These are the deviation from linearity in the diagram for the first-order reaction with respect to monomer concentration [9] and the deviation from linearity in the conversion w time diagram. The values are given in Table 1.…”
