Study of the progressive failure of concrete by phase field modeling and experiments

Abstract: In this research, experiments and numerical simulations are employed to research the failure process of concrete. Fracture experiments on three-point bending (TPB) concrete beams with a prefabricated edge notch at the middle of the beam bottom are performed using a modified rigid testing instrument. The characteristics of the crack and section are analyzed, including the crack tensile opening displacement, crack length and width, and crack faces characteristics. Also, the full curves of the force-crack tensile… Show more

“…Subsequently, to study the influences of strain rate and temperature on crack development, a two-dimensional particle flow code (Itasca Consulting Group Inc, 2008) was utilized to numerically simulate the SHPB experiment, and the parameters and geometric model in the simulation were calibrated and validated by comparing the results obtained numerically with the results obtained experimentally. Finally, as a lot of cracks may initiate between each particle in the frozen soil under high-velocity impact loading within a short period of time, conventional analyses of the crack development were not adopted in the study, such as crack propagation velocity (Wu et al., 2020), crack opening displacement (Wang et al., 2021b), and crack angle (Frankl et al., 2022). The changes in cracks with time are presented in a more intuitive manner.…”
