Study of the sensitivity of high-strength cold-resistant shipbuilding steels to thermal cycle of arc welding

Abstract: Background: Structure and properties of welded joints of low-alloy thermomechanically processed (09G2FB) and quenched and tempered shipbuilding steels (10XN2MD, 08XN3MD, and 12XN3MF), welded with manual metal arc welding (MMA) and submerged arc welding (SAW), were studied. Methods: Effects of specific energy input on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and impact energy of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) have been investigated, and probable reasons for crack formation in welded joints have been found.

“…The volume fraction of perlite in the ferrite matrix was estimated at 1%. The HAZ could be divided into four different zones (see Figure 2b): coarse-grained (CGHAZ), fine-grained (or recrystallized zone-FGHAZ), intercritical (ICHAZ), and subcritical (or over-tempering zone-SCHAZ) [19]. The closest to the WM was the CGHAZ.…”

“…Cold cracks can be located in the weld and in the HAZ. Cold cracking is the main problem in the welding of high-strength low allow (HSLA) steels [17], which are commonly used as a part of offshore constructions [18]. There are a few methods for improving the weldability of steels that are commonly used for joints made in the open air.…”

“…The values at T 0 = 300 K are given in Table 4. The microstructure of a welded material is examined in detail and how the heat affected zone is affected by the temperature is explained [47]. In this context, the HAZ can theoretically be designed as an FGM.…”
