Study of Urinary Concentrations of Mandelic Acid in Employees Exposed to Styrene

Abstract: Mandelic acid (MA) is an important metabolite of styrene. In humans, measurement of its concentration in urine provides an important assessment of the overall level of styrene exposure in workers of the reinforced plastic manufacturing industry. The aim of our study was to investigate in these workers the relationship between MA concentration and styrene exposure time and intensity as well as its dependence on work occupation. The concentration of MA in the urine samples of 35 employees was analyzed with HPLC … Show more

“…The latter is oxidised to mandelic acid and 2-oxo-2-phenylacetic acid ( phenylglyoxylic acid). 1,[3][4][5] Both 1-phenylethane-1,2-diol and mandelic acid 1 are excreted in urine and monitoring of their levels is used to assess environmental exposure to styrene, 6,7 whilst 2-oxo-2-phenylacetic acid has been shown to induce striatal-motor toxicity in rats. 8 Mandelic acid 1 is also used pharmaceutically in α-hydroxyacid chemical skin peels for the treatment of acne, scarring and hyperpigmentation 9 and in urinary antiseptics and bladder irrigants.…”

“…Kidney damage was also noted in workers occupationally exposed to ST (10,11). The metabolites of ST observed in the urine of rats and humans (12)(13)(14). This has led to demand for to study laboratory animals to be used in the early diagnosis and prevention of occupational diseases.…”
