Passive tuned liquid dampers, being cost-effective, easy to implement, and reliable structural vibration control devices, have received significant attention from designers and researchers. Considerable works devoted to the extraction of higher damping, increase in volumetric efficiency, improvement in architectural adaptability, and use in a large spectrum of structures have led to the development of a variety of configurations of passive tuned liquid dampers. Rigorous research efforts are being devoted to the utilization of different forms of tuned liquid dampers for the vibration control of buildings, bridges, chimneys, wind turbines, etc. However, till now, only a few varieties of tuned liquid dampers have been implemented in real-life structures, while the others require further refinement. This necessitates the present work, through which a systematic review on tuned liquid dampers of various configurations for structural response reduction is presented, with a focus on the design of the dampers. To organize the review in a structured manner, the large family of tuned liquid dampers is categorized into five groups based on their energy dissipation mechanism, namely the tuned sloshing damper, tuned liquid column damper, combined tuned sloshing damper-tuned liquid column damper system, compliant liquid damper, and liquid damper with submerged tuned oscillator. The modeling, analysis, design, and performance-related aspects of the different varieties of tuned liquid dampers are covered. The advantages and applicability of the different types of tuned liquid dampers are highlighted along with their real-life installations. The current gaps in the development of the various tuned liquid damper configurations and scope of future developments are also identified.

This paper is concerned with the parametric investigation on the structural dynamic response of moving fuel‐storage tanks with baffles. Since the structural dynamic behaviour is strongly coupled with interior liquid motion, the design of a fuel‐storage tank securing the structural stability becomes the appropriate suppression of the flow motion, which is in turn related to the baffle design. In order to numerically investigate the parametric dynamic characteristics of moving tanks, we employ the arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) finite element method that is widely being used to deal with the problems with free surface, moving boundary, large deformation and interface contact. Following the theoretical and numerical formulations of fluid‐structure interaction problems, we present parametric numerical results of a cylindrical fuel‐storage tank moving with uniform vertical acceleration, with respect to the baffle number and location, and the inner‐hole diameter. An analytical model for describing the effectiveness of tuned liquid damper (TLD) with submerged nets for suppressing horizontal vibration of structures is proposed. Dissipation energy due to the liquid motion under sinusoidal excitation is calculated based on nonlinear shallow water wave theory. In particular, the effects of hydraulic resistance produced by nets installed in a tank on the performance of TLDs are examined. The results of dissipation energy theoretically obtained are confirmed by experiments. To show the effectiveness of the proposed analytical model for TLD-structure interaction problems, the case in which TLD with nets is installed on top of a pylon of a cable-stayed bridge is described and the calculated results are compared with the actual experimental data. In the calculation, it is shown that the optimal damping factor, as is the case for tuned mass dampers (TMD), can be produced by the nets, and the effectiveness of TLD with nets are demonstrated.
