Study on erosion resistance characteristics of Fe-MWCNT composite plating with respect to lead-free solder

Abstract: Abstract. Sn-3mass%Ag-0.5mass%Cu lead-free solder causes strong erosion of Fe plating, which is used in hand soldering. In order to improve the durability of the soldering iron tip, we tried Fe-MWCNT (Multi-walled Carbon Nanotube) composite plating on the tip. Microstructures and the erosion resistance of the Fe-MWCNT composite plating under heating were examined. On the basis of the SEM/EDS analysis, it was confirmed that there were MWCNTs in the Fe-MWCNT composite plating. Even when heated to 673 K, MWCNTs w… Show more

“…J. Watanabe et al examined the erosion resistance of Fe-MWCNT (Multi Wall Carbon Nanotube) composite in molten Pb-free solder alloy. They found that by applying the Fe-MWNT composite material the resistance against erosion was increased, but wetting was decreased [20]. Although this concept seemed to be promising, the applied composite material is rather costly and its production is complicated, therefore it might not offer a reasonable solution.…”

“…Their research showed that the resistance of the composite material increases, whereas the wetting of the surface by liquid SAC decreases, which is also an important parameter for the stability of the solder wave. [16] In addition, the production of the composite is much more expensive, and the cost-effective production of the tool is also an important aspect. Thus, the lifetime of the tool cannot be improved, or only to a negligible extent, by modifying the solder alloy with composite materials.…”

“…It was confirmed that the erosion resistance of SAC305 was about 100 times greater than that of Fe alone when added to inexpensive and readily available multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). 7,8) In this study, we focused on boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs), 912) which have a similar structure to MWCNTs. Compared to MWCNTs, BNNTs are chemically stable and are superior in terms of oxidation and heat resistance.…”
