Study on the Evaluation of Impression in Streetscapes in Algeria and Japan Using Kansei Engineering

Abstract: This study aims to explore the semantic attributes of a dataset composed of 74 streetscape images collected in Algeria and Japan. Authors collected and evaluated human judgmental responses using SD method as a tool of Kansei engineering in order to provide information about human perception of the visual attributes of the collected images. The research process included: (1) Semantic selection of bipolar adjective pairs. (2) Psychological evaluation of the visual stimuli using a questionnaire of 40 adjectives p… Show more

“…The Semantic Differential method is commonly used in research to correlate the subject's opinion with the stimuli in photographs or the actual space as in the studies of the impression of streetscapes based on indications such as the sky factor (Nishio and Ito, 2015), the green ratio (Nakamura et al, 2010), or the perceived attractiveness of urban spaces via the relation between the distance from skyscrapers and VIAS (Wada and Kishimoto, 2011). Moreover, impression evaluation using Affinity Diagrams also provided insights into differences in perception of different age groups, genders, and cultural backgrounds (Kacha et al, 2015).…”

“…Psychological Survey through rating the RPIs through the Semantic Differential (SD) method which was originally introduced by Osgood et al 24) Our survey is based on 25 Bi-polar adjectives through a five-point differential scale evaluated by the target audiences *2) (Foreigner and Japanese residents). This method is used by several authors as Nakamura et al 25) , Almazan et al 26) , and Kacha et al 27) to measure the psychological meaning of places, as well as the attitudes, and impressions of respondents.…”
