Study on the Vortex in a Pump Sump and Its Influence on the Pump Unit

Abstract: The vortex in a pump sump is a negative problem for the pump unit, which can lead to the decline of pump performance. Focusing on the internal pressure characteristics of the floor-attached vortex (FAV) and its influence on the pump unit, the FAV was analyzed adopting the previously verified numerical simulation method and experiment. The results show that the pressure in the vortex core gradually decreases with time, drops to a negative pressure at the development stage, and then reaches the lowest pressure d… Show more

“…After the sump test was stable, showing periodic behavior, subsurface vortex formation of Type 2 was determined by comparing the time series dye test results with the post-processed vorticity results in PIV, as shown in Figure 5. Vortex formation is periodic in most sump test studies [15,24,25], whereas the observed subsurface vortex of Type 2 in this study followed a periodic pattern with a 2.56 s time period. The period pattern includes the appearance, maintenance and disappearance of the Type 2 subsurface vortices, whereas there is a period of absence of the subsurface vortices before they appear again.…”

“…In recent years, the axial flow pump in water jet propulsion systems and coastal pump stations has gradually played an increasingly important role [1][2][3]. At present, coastal pump stations basically use a large axial flow pump system (LAPS).…”

“…Previous intake structure CFD analysis primarily focused on pump-sump design optimization [25], investigation of internal flow patterns [26], streamline flow [27], and what measures should be taken to reduce vortex and swirl flow [28], and effect comparison between different measures and their combinations [29], but only a few of them were related to the prediction of pump flow patterns and the calculation of hydraulic loss of the sump at different intake water levels at the free surface. There were a lot of numerical models on outflow structures, but it was uncommon to look at the efficiency of the pumping system by calculating hydraulic loss and combining it with pump performance.…”
