Science is a cumulative activity, a body of knowledge sedimented in its publications, which form the foundation for further activity. Some items attract more attention than others; some are largely ignored. This paper looks at a largely overlooked book – Statistical Geography – published by three US sociologists at a time when geographers were launching their ‘quantitative revolution’. There was little literature within the discipline on which that revolution could be based, and a book with that title could have been seminal. But it was not, and as a consequence – as illustrated with three examples – major issues in spatial analysis were not addressed in the revolution’s early years. The paper explores why.

This article aims to discuss the role of the government in developing Wayang Orang Panggung especially in the Sriwedari community in Surakarta, Ngesti Pandowo in Semarang, and Bharata in Jakarta. This article based on the historical method. Since the beginning of Indonesian independence, the government carried out its function as a protector to maintain the existence of Wayang Orang Panggung, by improving the management of the performing arts, establishing the performance building, providing funding assistance, giving opportunities to perform at the state capital, and involving the artists of Wayang Orang in cultural missions. However, the government tended to be partial and more often conducted as a momentary response that must be addressed immediately because of it impossible to solve the community itself. Changes happened due to economic globalization and political dynamics in Indonesia that can threaten the existence of wayang orang and various forms of traditional arts. It raised hopes that the government could take the more fundamental role as patron-arts. In carrying out this function, the government requires a formulation on cultural policy as a basis for establishing the direction and strategy for the development and strengthening Wayang Orang Panggung and various forms of local culture, within the framework of national culture. The legal needed to carry out, UU RI No. 17 of 2017 about the Cultural Advancement, and Presidential Regulation No. 65 of 2018 concerning the Procedures for the Principles of Regional Culture and Cultural Strategies.

Common historiographical methods (textual analysis, inner and outer critics) were applied to analyze the written sources (Black, Macraild 2007), from which information about the design activities and terrain modification were obtained for each model area. Landscape is considered a specific type of heritage, and cultural landscapes provide an interface between nature and culture, the tangible and intangible, and biological and cultural diversity. They represent a closely woven network of relationships and the essence of cultural and personal identity. The most valuable cultural landscapes are designed landscapes or landscape parks. This paper focuses on landscaping activities associated with park foundation and management, especially those involving terrain changes and the remodeling of the natural topography. Terrain changes in landscape parks are typically meant to be hidden from viewers and to mimic natural lines and shapes. The paper focuses on determining to what degree the natural topography was used and changed, as well as what impact it had on the form and creation of the parks. Terrain changes should differ according to the natural topography, the landscape design activities, and contemporary landscape trends. Archival sources, including written documents, maps, and pictures, were considered viable sources. Four model areas were chosen for a detailed analysis of landscaping and design activities and their impact on the terrain: landscape parks around manor houses in Krásný Dvůr, Jemčina, Petrohrad, and Chudenice.
