Studying Lean-Kanban Approach Using Software Process Simulation

Abstract: We developed an event-driven simulator of the Kanban process a WIP limited pull system visualized by the Kanban board. WIP (work in process) represent the capacity in the activity to perform features simoultaneously. The simulator is fully object-oriented, and its design model reflects the objects of the Lean software development domain. We used this simulator to assess comparatively WIP-limited and unlimited processes. We also studied the optimum values of the working item limits in the activities, using a pa… Show more

“…Similar to the discrete-event strategy described in [15], the elements of the agent-based model include the concepts: Kanban, Backlog queue, Activities, Resources, Work Items, Release queue, Customer and WIP limits E. Model workflow Figure 6 diagrams the relationship of these concepts within the agent-based model for the KSS. The model is composed of one or more kanbans, each of which represents a project or, as will be seen, a pan-project team.…”

“…In addition, Kanban uses a board structure to visualize the workflow in which tasks are represented, assigned, and prioritized [9]. Most importantly, tasks shown in a Kanban task-board are assigned by using a pull mechanism that limits the work in process [10], and ultimately the production is constrained with the notion called minimum marketable functions [11]. In addition, an increasing number of software organizations recognize that customizing an agile methodology regarding company needs is vitally important [12].…”
