Subharmonics, cascades of period doubling, and chaotic behavior of photochemistry of the mesopause region

Abstract: Abstract. Choosing a simple oxygen-hydrogen model of the upper mesosphere, we study conditions necessary to create nonlinear effects such as cascades of period doubling andchaos. The model takes into account diurnal periodical excitation by solar radiation. The principal reaction of the model to water vapor changes and variations of the ratio of daytime hours to nighttime hours are studied in some detail. Although the model is rather simple as far as the considered photochemical processes are concerned, it is … Show more

“…As the original model we have used a model which is similar to that investigated by Fichtelmann and Sonnemann [1992] and Sonnemann and Fichtelmann [1997] and possesses a rich assortment of scenarios of dynamic behavior. We have suggested a general way to reduce the original model of an arbitrary atmospheric PCS to the essential model using a step-by-step procedure.…”

“…On the one hand, as mentioned above, the paper suggests a procedure of obtaining the essential dynamic model. As an example we use the photochemical dynamic model of the mesospheric PCS analogous to the model used by Fichtehnann and Sbnnemann [ 1992] and Sonnemann amt Fichtelmann [1997] (referred below as to FS and SF, respectively). The main advantage of this model is that it demonstrates a rich assortment of nontrivial dynamic regimes (FS, SF).…”

“…Although the whole system is internally nonlinearly linked (Sonnemann and Fichtelmann, 1997;Feigin et al, 1998), the difference between the realistic case and the cases in which one impact on the trend is held constant should mirror, to first order, the separate influence of the respective impact. Thus, the direct photochemical effect (DPE) of Lyman-α (only due to photodissociation and successive chemical reactions, without taking into account the effect of modulation of the dynamics and temperature, and consecutive impact on chemical species) on minor chemical constituents in the MLT region is calculated as the difference of run A − run B.…”

“…Several studies have derived eigenvalues and modes for the HO x -NO y -O 3 chemistry from near surface to the mesosphere. [34][35][36][37] An example of clean-air O 3 chemistry in summertime mid-latitudes at the surface is given in Table 1. Here a single 24-h day is integrated with [O 3 ] fixed for a reference case (O 3 ¼ 30 ppb, 1 ppb ¼ 1 nmol mol À1 ), and 24-h average rates are reported.…”
