The aim of this article is to show the relationship between the general goals of pragmatics and discourse analysis research in modern linguistics and the particular goals of Catalan pragmatics and discourse analysis research. It is assumed that pragmatics and discourse analysis can be considered, on the whole, to be a single scientific discipline, the general aim of which is to offer an interdisciplinary functional view of language use and communication. According to this general aim, pragmatic and discourse analysis studies seek explanations on both use processes and the relationship between language use and language structures. From these two areas of interest, a series of interdependent scientific objectives have developed that have been studied to varying extents in Catalan language research.
