Subjectively Experienced Time and User Satisfaction: An Experimental Study of Progress Indicator Design in Mobile Application

Abstract: In the user's interaction with systems, waiting and interruptions often constitute a source of negative experiences. However, system response time can be difficult or impossible to control. This study explores "subjective experienced time", which refers to the users' assessment of system response timeliness. The aim of this study is to gain increased knowledge of user satisfaction and subjectively experienced time in interaction with mobile applications. Thirty participants used and evaluated three mobile appl… Show more

“…Consequently, waiting time and interruptions often constitute negative user experiences. So, the degree of feedback and experienced time correlates to user satisfaction (Willermark, 2021). In addition, perceived utility, quality of information, quality of the system and quality of services are most important in influencing user satisfaction (Mariano, 2020).…”

“…According Chen and Li (2020) , using a company’s spokes-character instead of a bar or pie animation on the loading page in an app can reduce users’ perceived waiting time. Previous work examining the use of spokes-characters for this purpose has focused on the effects of either the type of the animations used during the loading process or the actual loading time on users’ satisfaction, emotional experience, perceived waiting time, and threshold for tolerable waiting time ( Cao and Hu, 2018 ; Zhang et al, 2019 ; Chen and Li, 2020 ; Wang et al, 2021 ; Willermark et al, 2021 ). User interface designers have increasingly used dynamic spokes-characters in loading pages to improve user experience (e.g., in the Huya and Bilibili apps).…”
