Sublethal Acute and Chronic Exposure of Colorado Potato Beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) to the δ-Endotoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis

Abstract: Sublethal exposure of Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), larvae to the delta-endotoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis variety tenebrionis (Berliner) caused a dose-dependent reduction in feeding and weight gain when tested in a leaf disk bioassay. The highest doses of chronic (continuous-lower concentration) exposure resulted in peak foliage consumption on day 1 as compared with peak consumption on days 3 and 4 when exposure was acute (24-h higher concentration). Dose and exposure regimen inter… Show more

“…Sublethal reproductive effects of Bacillus thuringiensis (Berliner) have also been reported on some insect pests. Adult females of Colorado potato beetle surviving exposure to delta-endotoxin of B. thuringiensis tended to produce around 45% fewer eggs (Costa et al, 2000). Similarly, adult females of spruce budworm Choristoneura fumiferana Clemens coming from larvae surviving delta-endotoxin treatments laid a lower number of eggs even if egg fertility was not affected (Pedersen et al, 1997).…”

“…c Control predicted if the agents exhibit independent action. (Cloutier and Jean, 1998;Costa et al, 2000). The hypothesis follows, therefore, that B. thuringiensis might synergize B. bassiana activity by prolonging the interval of time between molts (providing the fungus with more time to breach the cuticle before being cast oV).…”

“…Colorado potato beetle larvae (Leptinotarsa decemlineata, Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) reared for 24 hours on leaves coated with 62 to 500 ppm Bacillus thuringiensis (BT) endotoxin solution experienced significant delayed mortality in the pupal stage (approximately 25 to 70%) (Costa, et al 2000). More crucially, short-term dietary exposures to BT endotoxin (24hr) produced more significant long-term effects than chronic dietary exposures, even though the calcuated quantity of BT consumed was imilar for both acute and chronic exposures.…”
