Neonicotinoid insecticides affect the physiology or behavior of insects, posing risks to non-target organisms. In this study, the effects of sublethal doses of two neonicotinoid insecticides, acetamiprid and dinotefuran, against Chrysopa pallens (Rambur) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) were determined and compared. The results showed that acetamiprid and dinotefuran at LD10 (8.18 ng a.i. per insect and 9.36 ng a.i. per insect, respectively) and LD30 (16.84 ng a.i. per insect and 15.01 ng a.i. per insect, respectively) significantly prolonged the larval stages and pupal stages (except acetamiprid LD10), compared to control. In addition, acetamiprid and dinotefuran at LD30 significantly prolonged the adult preoviposition period (APOP) and total preoviposition period (TPOP). In contrast, the two insecticides at LD10 and LD30 had no significant effect on the longevity, fecundity, reproductive days, preadult survival rate (%), intrinsic rate of increase (r), net reproductive rate (R0), and finite rate of increase (λ). These results provide a theoretical basis for the rational use of these two insecticides and the utilization and protection of C. pallens.

Culex pipiens complexes play an important role in the transmission of a wide range of pathogens that infect humans, including viruses and filarial worms, as well as pathogens of wildlife, such as the avian malaria parasite (Plasmodium spp.). Numerous biotic and abiotic stresses influence vector-borne pathogen transmission directly, through changes in vector density, or indirectly by changing vector immunocompetence, lifespan, or reproductive potential. Among these stresses, mosquito exposure to sublethal doses of pesticides could have important consequences. In addition to being exposed to pollutants in aquatic breeding sites, mosquitoes can also be exposed to chemicals as adults through their diet (plant nectar). In this study, we explored the impact of mosquito exposure at the larval and adult stages to one of the most commonly used pesticides, imidacloprid, a chemical belonging to the class of the neonicotinoids, on a set of life history traits ranging from development time to fecundity. We also studied the impact of this pesticide on the susceptibility of mosquitoes to infection by the avian malaria parasite, Plasmodium relictum. Surprisingly, we observed no effects of imidacloprid on any of the parameters examined. This result highlights the fact that Culex pipiens mosquitoes do not appear to be susceptible to imidacloprid when exposure doses are close to those measured in the field.

Exploring the interactions between host plants, herbivores and natural enemies is an important experimental approach to enhance biological control and induced plant defense responses following infestation by herbivores could enable plants to minimize damage. Orius sauteri (Poppius), an important generalist predator, has been widely used as a biological control agent for suppressing many agricultural pests on agronomic and horticultural crops. It is also documented as ovipositing eggs in plant tissues and piercing and sucking as omnivorous predator. We therefore explored the fitness parameters of primary (western flower thrips) and secondary pests (whiteflies) on three different plant species pre-inoculated by O. sauteri. Pre-inoculation of O. sauteri significantly reduced the survival of Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) on tomato and Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) on cowpea. The reproduction of B. tabaci on tomato, cucumber and cowpea was affected by O. sauteri in a different manner. The presence of O. sauteri significantly reduced the reproduction of F. occidentalis on tomato and cucumber plants, but there was no significant effect on cowpea plants. This demonstrates that plants with the pre-inoculation of O. sauteri decrease the performance of herbivores on different plant species but to differing degrees. These results further enhance our knowledge of ecological relationships between natural enemies and herbivores, and provide the context for the early release of natural enemies to control pests.
