Sublethal effects of essential oil ofCinnamomum zeylanicumBlume on life expectancy (ex) and age-specific fertility (mx) of two-spotted spider mite,Tetranychus urticaeKoch (Acari: Tetranychidae)

Abstract: Two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch, is one of the most important pests of agricultural products that have a global distribution. Now, the control is dependent on the use of chemical pesticides. The effects of the sublethal concentrations (LC 10 and LC 25 ) of the essential oil of Cinnamomum zeylanicum were evaluated on some parameters of the life table of the pest, at the constant temperature of 30°C, relative humidity of 40 ± 5% and photoperiod of 16L: 8D. Our results showed that the essential … Show more

“…Similar results were reported on Podisus nigrispinus, where survival rates of this predatory stink bug declined at different concentrations of neem oil(Zanuncio et al 2016). Reduction in T. urticae life expectancy (e xj ) is an effect of essential oils treatment(Rezaei et al 2014;Esmaeily et al 2017). Garlic extract reduced age-stagespeci c survival rate (s xj ) of P. maculiventris(Mamduh et al 2017).…”

“…These effects may eventually result in a reduced population growth of this predator. Similar effects were observed on developmental time duration of T. urticae when exposed to sublethal concentrations of Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume (Laurales: Lauraceae)(Rezaei et al 2014). Also the longevity and total life span of A. swirskii were in all oil treatments reduced.…”

“…Essential oils are widely used in human and veterinary medicine, and for protection against insects, mites and pathogens. The essential oils of cinnamon (Cinnamoumi zeylanicum) and clover (Eugenia caryophyllata) are used against insects (Plata Rueda et al, 2018), mites (Rezaei et al, 2014) and pathogens (Božik et al, 2017). Antifungal activity of cinnamon and clover essential oils on mold has been confirmed (Ju et al, 2018).…”

“…Among the few published works [48], the sublethal effects of the Cinnamomum zeylanicum essential oil has shown LD 50 = 23.4 μL/L. Similarly, the toxicity of two insecticides against moveable stages of immature T. urticae Koch.…”
