Submental thyroid ectopy might cause subclinical hypothyroidism in early childhood

Abstract: Objective:Thyroid ectopy is a rare condition resulting from abnormal embryologic development and migration of the gland. Sublingual is the most common thyroid ectopy; all other ectopic thyroid locations occur very rare. There are no reports in the literature that describe the clinical course of patients with congenital hypothyroidism due to thyroid ectopy. Methods and Results:We present a child with congenital hypothyroidism detected on neonatal screening which had a subclinical course during follow-up. “…Similar to a normal thyroid, the ectopic thyroid is susceptible to the same pathology that affects a normal thyroid, including goiters, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, benign adenomas, and malignancies. [ 7 ] The incidence of carcinoma in ectopic thyroid is reported to be about 1%. In contrast to the malignancies found in the orthotopic thyroid gland, follicular carcinoma is the most common subtype in ectopic thyroid, instead of the more common papillary subtype.…”

“…Thyroid ectopia accounts for nearly 60% of thyroid dysgenesis. Ectopic thyroid results from aberrant embryogenesis during its passage from the floor of the primitive foregut to the final pre tracheal location (1). Its prevalence is about 1 per 10000-30000, rising to 1 per 4000-8000 with thyroid disease (2).…”

“…Ectopic thyroid is common in females, especially in Asia. In 70-90% of cases, it is the only thyroid tissue present and can be found anywhere along its pathway of descent, and the most common location is sublingual region (1,3).…”
