Substance Use, Self-Esteem, and Self-Efficacy Among Homeless and Runaway Youth in New Orleans

Abstract: Each year, nearly 1.7 million children and adolescents in the US run away or are forced out by their caregivers. Although several studies have examined numerous risk and protective factors among homeless and runaway youth (HRY), little is known about this population's self-efficacy. This cross-sectional study investigates substance use, self-esteem, and self-efficacy in 51 HRY in New Orleans. Results include high rates of substance use disorders, lower self-esteem and self-efficacy compared with that of non-HR… Show more

“…Judge et al (2002) showed that self-esteem and selfefficacy are part of multidimensional construct, they named this Core Self-Evaluations. Based on different self-evaluation research, the same tendencies have been seen in the case of more specific self-evaluations, like general and academic selfefficacy and self-esteem (Maccio and Schuler 2012, Dachlbeck and Lightsey 2008, Pullmann and Allik 2008. So, based on previous research, it is natural to assume that self-evaluations are influenced by latent traits that include both general and academic self-esteem and self-efficacy.…”

“…Previous studies have shown that self-evaluations, specifically self-esteem and self-efficacy, are positively correlated to each other (Maccio and Schuler 2012, Dachlbeck and Lightsey 2008, Huang and Liu 2007. There is reason to believe that general and academic self-evaluation are also positively related.…”

“…In the case group, only 5.7% had high self-esteem, while this rate was found to be 31.4% in the control group. Self-esteem levels were measured very low on a study of 51 teenagers who had escaped from home and had a substance abuse story [26]. Low self-esteem scores in substance abuse rise with treatment [12].…”
