Sudden Cardiac Death in Young Individuals: A Current Review of Evaluation, Screening and Prevention

Abstract: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) can affect all age groups, including young persons. While less common in the age < 35 population, the occurrence of SCD in the young raises concern, with multiple possible etiologies and often unanswered questions. While coronary artery disease is the leading cause in those > 35 years of age, the younger population faces a different subset of pathologies associated with SCD, including arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies. The tragic nature of SCD in the young entails that we explore and … Show more

“…Reality accommodates this consequence in the sudden and unexpected deaths in the apparently healthy (from newborn through to adults) which have hitherto constituted a challenge for medical examiners, law enforcement officers, and society as a whole, 59 such as the "sudden cardiac deaths" that occur in young humans in spite of a "structurally normal" heart and negative toxicology analysis. 60 If the aging individuals are those who escape this sudden death due to the intense pathological response that underlies the fatality of prenatal disease processes as other sufferers die off from the womb and become rare after the first day of life are those who reduce this response promptly to levels that are so low that the recruitment of destructive cells into the blood fails to occur in them after birth, what must medicine observe? Such aging humans who die from the slow deterioration due to the extreme reduction of the pathological response that underlies disease processes must not suffer from cancer like the dying humans in whom destructive cells are recruited by cancer cells even in the face of malignant tumors and other factors to which the current paradigm attributes this suffering and evidence of such recruitment must not be found in their bone marrow and other blood-forming sites.…”

“…Sudden cardiac death in the young (SCDY) is defined as "SCD that affects a population aged ≤ 35 years" [4][5][6][7], not athletes and athletes [8,9], with multiple hereditary/genetic or non-hereditary/genetic causes.…”

“…Продолжается научный поиск в вопросах клинической значимости факторов риска, их комбинированного воздействия. Установлена актуальность создания новых неинвазивных методов скрининга, направленных на выявление предикторов и раннюю диагностику БСК [1][2][3][4][5][6][7].…”
