Summing up 100 years of asthma

Abstract: In this review, we aim to lead the readers through the historical highlights of pathophysiological concepts and treatment of asthma. Understanding the nature and links of asthma has modeled our diagnostic, pathophysiological and therapeutic thinking and acting. The recognition of its heterogeneous nature in combination with several refined and sophisticated technologies will mark a new era of phenotype-specific approach and treatment of asthma.

“…However, to our knowledge, there are no reports on the antiasthmatic activity of Samchulkunbi-tang . Patients with chronic asthma who take antiasthmatic drugs (including corticosteroids) for a long and indefinite time may develop serious side effects [17]. The present study was designed to determine if SCTE has anti-inflammatory and antiasthmatic effects in a mouse model of OVA-induced airway inflammation.…”

“…Phosphodiesterase inhibition is an old concept in the treatment of COPD which has been already described by Hirsch and colleagues in 1922 [13]. However, the application of the prototypic non-selective phosphodiesterase (PDE)-inhibitors, aminophylline and theophylline, has been limited by many drug-interactions and a narrow dose-range, causing many dose-dependent, mostly cardiovascular and gastrointestinal side effects.…”
