13C‐Urea Breath Test to Diagnose Helicobacter pylori Infection in Children Aged up to 6 Years

Abstract: Fifteen of 68 (22.1%) patients were H. pylori infected. Sensitivity was 93.3% (95% CI; 86.8%-99.7%) and specificity was 96.2% (95% CI; 93.6%-98.8%), and these values were equal for DOB and urea hydrolysis rate. Negative DOB values in noninfected patients ranged from -1.5 per thousand to 2.6 per thousand and positive DOB values ranged from 10.8 per thousand to 105.5 per thousand. There was no relationship between DOB values and age. Conclusion. 13C-UBT performed with infrared spectroscopy proved to be a reliabl… Show more

“…101 Excellent results have been observed in our population, for children aged less than 6 years (sensitivity of 88.0% and specificity of 95.0%) and for older children as well (sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 98.0%). 102 The carbon 13-labeled urea breath test is currently regarded as the method of choice to assess therapeutic response in adults and in children.…”

“…In the study by Kawakemi et al on 75 children aged 6 months to 8 years, sensitivity and specificity of UBT were 96.8% and 93.2% respectively (17) . In another study by Machado et al on 68 children aged 6 months to 5 year 11 months, sensitivity and specificity of UBT was 93.3% and 96.2% respectively (23) . In the current study 60 children aged 7-17 years were included which had difference compared to Kawakami et al (17) and Machado et al study (23) .…”

In the current study 60 children aged 7-17 years were included which had difference compared to Kawakami et al (17) and Machado et al study (23) . In 2011, a systematic review and meta-analysis by Leal et al declared sensitivity of 95.9% and specificity 95.7% for all age groups (20) .…”
