Superconducting joint between multi-filamentary Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ tapes based on incongruent melting for NMR and MRI applications

Abstract: Recently, we proposed a method of forming superconducting joints between high-temperature superconducting wires based on the incongruent melting of an intermedium, called crystalline joint by melted bulk. Using this technique with GdBa2Cu3O7−δ-coated conductors, a superconducting joint with a critical current of 7 A at 77 K was obtained. In the present study, a joint between multi-filamentary Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ (Bi2223) tapes was prepared without an intermedium, employing incongruent melting of Bi2223 filaments… Show more

“…Considering that the magnet operating current is ∼200 A, the joint critical currents must be >248 A for n = 40, or >266 A for n = 30. The in-field current transport property of the REBCO joint seen in figures 3(a) and (a') provides sufficient performance, while more efforts must be expended in improving the Bi-2223 joint performance [30][31][32].…”

“…In the case of indirect superconducting joint, HTSs are joined by an intermediate superconducting layer [4]. Additionally, an indirect superconducting joint between Bi-2223 conductors [30][31][32] is being developed.…”

“…The only reported LTS/HTS NMR magnet with an HTS superconducting joint is the 1.3 GHz of the MIRAI program in Japan [7]. Superconducting joints of REBCO and Bi2223 with a resistance lower than 10 −12 Ω have been reported [8][9][10][11]. However, a strong shielding current is observed in the REBCO tape.…”

“…( 1). With recent developments in superconducting joint technology for high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes/wires, 2,[7][8][9][10][11][12][13] studies have been published on the evaluation of R j for an HTS closed loop using the current decay method. However, the time dependence of I loop (or the magnetic field trapped in the loop) in these studies did not fit well to Eq.…”
