“…An alumina sorbent placed in the extraction vessel removed the bulk of the coextracted lipids in the SFE of chlorinated pesticide and PCBs from adipose breast tissue (438). SFE was also used for the determination of PCBs in lyophilized fish tissue (439). Identity and quantitative determination was accomplished with GC with ECD and MS. Lopez-Avila and co-workers directly determined PCBs in soil with an off-line SFE-ELISA approach (440).…”

“…To verify the efficiency of the extraction, various means were employed: comparison with other extraction techniques and comparison with the same technique under more drastic conditions were the most frequently used (5, 13). Bøwadt et al (5) found that, in SFE analysis of lyophilized fish tissue, high extraction temperatures yield scarcely better extraction and also imply a less pure extract, with more lipids and interfering compounds. They then operated at a mild temperature (60°C); however their method, when used on fish species with fat content higher than 8 -10%, yielded an extract that was injectable only on a split-splitless injector because of the presence of lipids.…”

“…Using this technique, Bøwadt and Johansson (4) reported isomer-specific PCB determination in marine sediments: the entire cleanup procedure took only some 30 min, compared with the many hours necessary with traditional methods, and with greatly reduced manipulations. The same authors (5) reported the analysis of PCBs in lyophilized fish tissues by SFE. Extraction conditions and their influence on the purity of the extract were also discussed.…”

“…Extraction of matrices to which analytes have been added or "spiked" is inadequate to evaluate a method's effectiveness at determining native concentrations because of the absence of typical analyte/matrix interactions in laboratoryamended samples (10). We report here the development of a rapid, partially automated method to analyze PCBs in fish tissues using SFE.…”
