Superiority of skinfold measurements and waist over waist-to-hip ratio for determination of body fat distribution in a population-based cohort of Caucasian Dutch adults

Abstract: Objective: To determine which anthropometric measurement is the most reliable alternative for fat distribution as measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Design: Population-based survey carried out in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Subjects and methods: A total of 376 individuals (200 women) with a mean age of 36.5 years and mean body mass index (BMI) of 24.0 (G3.1) kg/m 2 underwent various anthropometric and DXA measurements of central (CFM) and peripheral fat mass (PFM). Furthermore, for the assessm… Show more

“…Central subcutaneous fat mass was calculated from the sum of suprailiacal SFT, subscapular SFT. Peripheral subcutaneous fat mass was calculated from the sum of triceps SFT, biceps SFT (Birmingham et al, 1993;Ketel et al, 2007). Body length at the age of 1.5 and 6 months was measured in supine position to the nearest millimeter using a neonatometer and in 24-month olds height was measured in standing position by a Harpenden stadiometer (Holtain Limited, Dyfed, UK).…”

“…Skinfold measurements are most popular because of the method's low cost and practicality. 6 The technique involves measuring skinfold fat at specific anatomical sites and using these values in a regression equation to predict the subject's percentage of body fat.…”
