In the business world, as well as in everyday life, there is an increasing number of needs, requirements, and expectations that need to be met to ensure mutual satisfaction. To achieve this, standards are increasingly taking place within the business of organizations, to make business simpler, safer, and more secure. By applying and introducing standards, companies achieve continuous improvement of their performance as well as a competitive advantage.The aim of this paper is to present the standards for companies from the food industry and their supply chain. Knowing that the food industry is very specific in terms of safety and quality, a number of standards have been developed to prevent possible inconsistencies on this issue, which may affect human and animal health. All actors in the supply chain, and especially end users, demand that the products that reach them be safe, which gains trust in the organization. Organizations are increasingly introducing standards and systems that will enable the safety and quality of their products, after which improvements in the performance of the organization are realized.

Global private food safety and quality standards have undergone some major overhauls during the past two decades, and these will continue to evolve with the recent emphasis on harmonization. The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) attempts to ensure that harmonize retail standards are commendable and elegant in principle, but in practice, retailers continue to demand their own standard, whilst supporting GFSI’s benchmarking program. It is difficult to see such retailers giving up their own standards and the control they currently exert as chain captains. There is also the risk that too much harmonization will result in these standards losing their individuality and uniqueness. Amidst the struggle for private standard dominance, alternative approaches to risk management (e.g., self-assessment of risk, independent audits and risk ranking) may be the way forward, similar to how insurance risks are calculated for businesses. Furthermore, this risk-based approach could also lead to the effective implementation of co-regulation, where both public and private sector compliances are addressed together—a win-win situation. This paper considers the implications and future trends of fresh produce farming, and identifies five interventions (i.e., assurance schemes), which include the do-nothing scenario to underpinning one’s brand or label with an existing scheme

Introduction Evidence to date suggests that the incidence of foodborne outbreaks from the UK fresh produce sector is very low. It is interesting to note how the fresh produce farms practice their pre-harvest activities to ensure that safe produce enter the food chain. Objective The study aims to determine the perceptions of fresh produce farmers towards farm food safety. The current farm food safety practices among voluntary participating farms are also identified and discussed.Methods A survey of current farm food safety perceptions (n = 44 fresh produce farms) and practices were conducted. Twelve fresh produce farms (out of the 44) participated in detailed discussions relating to their current farm food safety practices. Results The present study is one of the few research works that focused on farm food safety management practices. The findings in this study suggested that the vast majority of the participating fresh produce growers generally have good perceptions and practices in farm food safety. Conclusion This reiterates the fact that the studied farms practiced good agricultural practices which lead to continuous safety and quality assurance of the crops.
