Supply Chain Management of Mango (Mangifera indica L.) Fruit: A Review With a Focus on Product Quality During Postharvest

Abstract: Mango (Mangifera indica L.) is a widely consumed fruit in tropical/subtropical regions around the world due to its excellent flavor and taste, and valuable source of nutrients and phytochemical compounds. As a climacteric fruit, mango is easily perishable after harvesting due to the ripening process, environmental conditions, and improper postharvest handling, leading to significant quality losses as well as economic loss throughout a supply chain. Postharvest losses are attributed to harvesting at an improper… Show more

“…It causes anthracnose disease across a diverse array of crops, including almond, avocado, apple, coffee, guava, mango, strawberry, papaya, banana, passion fruit, citrus, grapes, and cashews [36]. Anthracnose represents a significant threat to mango production worldwide, affecting both the economic viability of mango farming and the availability of high-quality mangoes for consumers [37].…”

“…Mango ( Mangifera indica L.) is a fruit crop of utmost significance in tropical and subtropical regions. In the period of rapidly changing climates, farmers, especially smallholders, have demonstrated a strong interest in diversifying their agricultural produce to include fruits like mangoes and setting profit-making goals that help achieve food security [ 1 ]. The rising popularity of mangoes can be attributed to shifting consumer preferences [ 2 ].…”

“…Mango fruit physiology includes maturity stage, fruit ripening, fruit quality, postharvest storability, and diseases using physiological, biochemical, and molecular aspects. Understanding these processes will be helpful for improving mango production and marketability with the highest retention of fruit quality. Significant progress has been made toward understanding mango fruit physiology using omics-based (transcriptomic, metabolomic, and proteomic) approaches. Therefore, to breed and develop varieties with improved flavor properties, the genetic complexities of fruit flavor must be captured and assessed. , For this, integration of omics-based approaches with modern breeding techniques is a promising approach for the development of mango varieties with the improved shelf life, morphometric traits, and nutritional as well as flavor qualities. , Identifying key genes, metabolites, and proteins may reveal important biomarkers or indicators of ripening stages, fruit flavor, disease resistance, stress tolerance, postharvest storability, and long shelf life.…”
