Supportive periodontal therapy in moderate‐to‐severe periodontitis patients: A two‐year randomized clinical trial

Abstract: Aim Evaluate supportive periodontal therapy (SPT) consisting of oral prophylaxis with oral hygiene instructions as sole intervention (test) or combined with subgingival instrumentation removing/disrupting the subgingival biofilm (control). Material and Methods Sixty‐two treated periodontitis patients (50.97 ± 9.26 years, 24 smokers) were randomly assigned to receive, every 3 months during 2 years, either test or control treatment. “…Thus, these results reflect clinically important OHIP-14 changes, even considering the low scores of the OHIP-14 questionnaire at baseline. Low scores at baseline and the last evaluation in both groups reflect clinical results achieved during the SPT period, as shown in Angst et al (2019).…”

“…Sixty-two participants composed the consecutive sample of the SPT study. Clinical data from SPT interventions have been published previously (Angst et al, 2019). Briefly, at baseline, starting 3 months after the end of the active periodontal therapy, participants were randomly allocated to receive oral prophylaxis (supragingival debridement of any calculus/biofilm up to the gingival margin and dental polishing) with oral hygiene instructions as sole intervention (test) or combined with subgingival instrumentation removing the subgingival biofilm (control).…”
