Inspired by high theoretical energy density (~2600 W h kg−1) and cost‐effectiveness of sulfur cathode, lithium–sulfur batteries are receiving great attention and considered as one of the most promising next‐generation high‐energy‐density batteries. However, over the past decades, the energy density and reliable safety levels as well as the commercial progress of lithium–sulfur batteries are still far from satisfactory due to the disconnection and huge gap between fundamental research and practical application. Therefore, it is highly necessary to revisit the scientific issues for the industrial applications of lithium–sulfur batteries. In this review, we focus on discussing the impact of design parameters (such as compaction density, sulfur loading, and electrolyte/sulfur ratio) on the electrochemical performance of lithium–sulfur batteries and corresponding inherent relationship and rules between them. We also propose the practical design rules of advanced sulfur electrodes. Moreover, safety hazard in respect of electrolyte, separator, and lithium metal anode is also illustrated in detail. With the target of paving the way for practical application of lithium–sulfur batteries, feasible solutions and strategies are brought up to address the aforementioned problems. Finally, we will discuss the current challenges and future research chance of lithium–sulfur batteries.

With the evolution of Li-ion batteries, they have been employed in many applications. However, high energy density and power density batteries are yet to be developed to meet the necessities at the application end. Sulfides are a good choice as anode material as they show a much higher specific capacity than conventional graphite anodes. But unfortunately, sulfide dissolution and polysulfide shuttling are big drawbacks for their operation. Herein, single phase ternary metal sulfide Cu 3 SnS 4 (CTS) nanoparticles are synthesized with high Cu : Sn ratio and examined for application as Li-ion battery anode. High specific capacities of 1082 mAh g À 1 at 0.2 A g À 1 and 440 mAh g À 1 at a high rate of 3 A g À 1 are realized with superior stability tested up to 950 cycles. Utilizing the CTS NPs can minimize the polysulfide dissolution. The high Cu : Sn ratio provides excess Cu atoms as the buffer matrix for volume expansion of Sn, leading to high stability and specific capacity. Compared to other reported Cu based mixed phase or composite ternary sulfide materials, the CTS NPs presented herein show a better performance. In a full cell device using LiCoO 2 (LCO) as cathode, a good performance is achieved as well with an energy density of 405 Wh/Kg at 0.1 A g À 1 . V-10 mA battery tester. The impedance and cyclic voltammetry were performed with VMP3 biologic system equipped with potentiostat and galvanostat channels.

The lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is considered as a promising future energy storage device owing to its high theoretical energy density, low cost of the raw active material (sulfur), and its environmental friendliness. On the other hand, there are still challenging issues for the practical applications of Li-S batteries, including low sulfur utilization, poor cyclability, and rate capability. Although considerable efforts are made to overcome the current obstacles in Li-S batteries, one is still far from meeting the requirements for the commercialization of Li-S batteries. This review outlines the recent progress in Li-S batteries based on novel configurations, such as incorporating functional interlayers/separators beyond the approach for preparing novel cathodes, and discusses the role of the configuration in Li-S batteries. The functions of the newly introduced functional interlayer/separator are highlighted to address the problems of Li-S batteries. From classification of the functions, the perspectives and outlook are presented to rationally design a novel functional interlayer/separator for high-performance Li-S batteries.
