Suppressive Activity of the Fruit of Momordica charantia with Exercise on Blood Glucose in Type 2 Diabetic Mice

Abstract: The antidiabetic activity of Momordica charantia L. (Cucurbitaceae) with exercise was investigated in KKAy mice, an animal model with type 2 diabetes with hyperinsulinemia. The water extract of the fruit of Momordica charantia L. (MC) with exercise reduced the blood glucose of KK-Ay mice 5 weeks after oral administration (pϽ0.001), and also significantly lowered the plasma insulin of KK-Ay mice under similar conditions (pϽ0.01). The blood glucose of MC with exercise is lower than that of MC only or exercise on… Show more

“…For the same reason, fresh bitter melon might have more potent activity to ameliorate postprandial hyperglycemia than the bitter melon extracts used in our study. However, at least in part, our data may explain why bitter melon ameliorated serum insulin and blood glucose levels in dietinduced obese rats and in type 2 diabetic mice, but did not in normal mice as previously reported (14)(15)(16).…”

“…In addition, protein extract from bitter melon has been shown to have insulinomimetic and insulin secretagogue effects ( 13 ). However, bitter melon reduces serum insulin and blood glucose levels in diet-induced obese rats and in type 2 diabetic mice, but does not affect normal mice (14)(15)(16). This effect of bitter melon conflicts with its insulinomimetic and insulin secretagogue effects.…”

“…La planta es muy común en las cercas de patios, fincas y potreros de toda la isla (Roig & Mesa, 1974). En la farmacología y actividad biológica de M. charantia, varios autores han estudiado el efecto hipoglicémico de la pulpa del fruto, semillas y planta entera, reportándose actividad de la planta para disminuir los niveles de glucosa (Miura et al 2004).…”
