Supracolloidal polymer chains of diblock copolymer micelles

Abstract: Directional attraction with lateral repulsion between colloidal nanoparticles can create their supracolloidal chains. Here, we demonstrate supracolloidal polymers of diblock copolymer micelles, which were polymerized by adjusting the polarity of the solvent. We also synthesized supracolloidal random and block copolymer chains.

“…72 Compartmentalization of the micelle corona has also been achieved through interpolyelectrolyte complexation (see Figure 4a). [75][76][77][78][79] can induce the second self-assembly process, such as solvent composition/nature of nonsolvent, [80][81][82] temperature, 83 electrostatic interactions, 84,85 metal-coordination, [86][87][88] pH, 89 hydrogen bonding, [90][91][92] and crystallization (see Section 4). Reproduced with permission from ref.…”

“…Recently, using anisotropic preassemblies as subunits for 1D self‐assembly has emerged as an efficient route to prepare 1D nanostructures . Through noncovalent interactions or chemical reactions, the anisotropic subunits created from block/graft copolymers can act as the monomer unit and “polymerize” themselves into a supramolecular polymer.…”

“…Under suitable conditions, the step polymerization of anisotropic MCMs into mesoscale supramolecular polymers can be triggered. Sohn and co‐workers demonstrated supramolecular polymer chains of diblock copolymer micelles . By increasing the polarity of the solvent, the preformed spherical micelles were converted to anisotropic subunits and polymerized into linear supramolecular chains.…”

“…39 It presumably caused the coalescence of the spherical micelles and consequently the emergence of the elongated micellar structures. 13,40 This was also indicated by the dumbbell-like shape of the short wormlike micelles (denoted by red arrows) and the beam pod-like feature of the longer species (denoted by green arrows) (Fig. 2d).…”
