Surface Activation of a Ferrimagnetic Glass–Ceramic for Antineoplastic Drugs Grafting

Abstract: A ferrimagnetic glass–ceramic, belonging to the system SiO2–Na2O–CaO–P2O5–FeO–Fe2O3, has been studied as potential carrier for antineoplastic agents, in order to exploit the combination of hyperthermia and chemotherapy. Different material pre‐treatments, such as ultrasonic washing, water, or simulated body fluid dipping, were evaluated to promote the surface activation of the glass–ceramic, i.e., the hydroxyl groups formation on it. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispers… Show more

“…The bioactive and ferrimagnetic glass ceramic (SC-45), with the composition (wt.%) 24.7 SiO 2 , 13.5 Na 2 O, 13.5 CaO, 3.3 P 2 O 5 , 14 FeO, and 31 Fe 2 O 3 , was prepared by traditional melt and quenching technique, as reported in [11][12][13]. In brief, commercial reagents (Na 2 CO 3 , CaCO 3 , SiO 2 , Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , FeSO 4 * 7H 2 O and Fe 2 O 3 , N 99.0%, Sigma Aldrich) were melted in a platinum crucible for 30 min at 1550°C and then poured on a brass plate.…”

“…The authors previously developed a ferrimagnetic glass-ceramic (SC-45) [11][12][13] characterized by magnetite crystals embedded in an amorphous bioactive matrix (analogous to Bioglass®). The presence of magnetic crystals makes possible to heat the material by the application of an external magnetic field.…”

“…Bretcanu et al [12][13][14][15] optimized a ferrimagnetic glass-ceramic composition belonging to the system SiO 2 -Na 2 O-CaO-P 2 O 5 -FeO-Fe 2 O 3 (SC45), which showed good magnetic and thermal properties, together with slow bioactivity kinetics, and it was successfully functionalized with antineoplastic agents [20].…”

“…The glass-ceramic composition originated from a silver-free composition (SC45), containing magnetite as crystalline phase, completely characterized in terms of morphology, structure, composition, bioactive and magnetic properties in previous papers [12,16,20]. In this work the bioactive and ferrimagnetic SC45 was enriched with silver to impart antimicrobial properties, thus realizing a multifunctional glass-ceramic useful for the treatment of bone tumor and associated complications.…”
