Surface-enhanced Raman analysis of sulfa drugs on colloidal silver dispersion

Abstract: Surface-enhanced Raman spectrometry (SERS) of three sulfa drugs (sulfadiazine, sulfamerazine, and sulfamethazine) is reported. Silver colloidal dispersions prepared by simple borohydride reduction of silver nitrate are used as substrates. The capability of SERS for spectral fingerprinting of analytes with close structural properties using easily prepared substrates and relatively simple instrumentation is illustrated. By careful attention to the timing in the measurement, quantitative information can be obtain… Show more

“…Surface-enhanced vibrational spectroscopic techniques, namely surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy [1][2][3] and surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopy [4,5], are frequently used in spectroscopic laboratories for the detection of pharmaceuticals and biologically active compounds owing to their ability to detect trace amounts of analytes [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. Spectra obtained using surface-enhanced spectroscopic techniques are also useful in the investigation of the adsorption mechanisms for different kinds of molecules located on metal surfaces [4,[15][16][17].…”

“…Silver is a very sensitive material for making active SERS substrates. A number of methods, including vacuum evaporation [6], electrochemical oxidation-reduction cycling [7,8], colloidal solution [9], immobilization of Ag nanoparticles [10], and the mirror reaction [11,12], have been explored for preparing silver substrates. Ni and Cotton [11] used conventional Tollen's reagent to form a layer of nano-Ag particles on frosted glass slides, and optimized experimental parameters (AgNO 3 concentration, solution temperature, and deposition time) by using 4,4 0 -bipyridine as the analyte.…”
