Surface Modification of Luminescent Lanthanide Phosphate Nanorods with Cationic “Quat-primer” Polymers

Abstract: "Quat-primer" polymers bearing cationic groups were investigated as a surface modifier for Tb-doped cerium phosphate green-emitting fluorescent nanorods (NRs). The NRs were synthesized by a microwave process without using any complex agents or ligands and were characterized with different analytical tools such as X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy. Poly(ethyleneimine) partially quarternized with glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride was synthesized separately and ch… Show more

“…Such RE(OH) 3 nanotubes were then treated at 120°C with aqueous solutions containing HF and NaF to obtain NaREF 4 nanotubes [101]. CePO 4 nanotubes were also prepared without additives after hydrothermal reaction of Ce(NO 3 ) 3 [104]. In all these examples, an optimization of the reaction pH was carried out.…”

“…Although several biomedical applications have been suggested for Tb-CePO 4 nanophosphors, very few works dealing with their functionalization have been reported. In fact, we have only found in literature a recent work on the functionalization of Tb-CePO 4 nanorods with "Quat-primer" polymers (Komban et al 2011). Herein, we also describe for the first time a procedure for the functionalization of the Tb-doped CePO 4 nanospindles with aspartic-dextran polymers.…”

“…Most of these methods conducted to long (in the micron range) nanowires (Bao et al 2010, Bu et al 2005, Yu et al 2009, Zhang et al 2009, nanorods (Komban et al 2011) or nanotubes ) with hexagonal structure.…”

“…These aqueous dispersions were stable over a large pH range, while the luminescence properties of the NP remained unaltered. 9 Equipped with aminoreactive cyclic carbonate-or epoxide groups as the attached functionalities, these polymers served as promoting agents to enhance the interfacial shear strength in carbon fiber-epoxy composites. 10 Amphiphilic core-shell particles with PEI cores and grafted linear polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) chains with diameters of 60-120 nm have been prepared by means of freeradical "grafting from" polymerization in aqueous media, initiated by amino polymer-radicals that were generated in situ by reaction of water-soluble amino polymers with peroxide initiators.…”

“…The characterization of the commercial hyperbranched PEI is described in detail in the literature. 9 2-Bromo-2-methylpropionic acid (98%), dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC; 99%), glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride (technical ! 90%), Nhydroxy-succinimide (98%), and N,N,N 0 ,N 00 ,N 00 -pentamethyldiethylenetriami-ne (99%) were purchased from Aldrich and have been used as received.…”
