Surface modification of poly(aryl ether ether ketone) film by remote oxygen plasma

Abstract: Surface modification of poly(aryl ether ether ketone) (PEEK) film surfaces by oxygen plasma treatment was investigated. Two procedures, the direct plasma treatment and the remote oxygen plasma treatment, were used as oxygen plasma treatments, and the efficiency of the hydrophilic modification was discussed. The direct and remote oxygen plasma treatments lead to degradation of the PEEK film as well as hydrophilic surface modification. The degradation disturbs the surface modification. The remote oxygen plasma t… Show more

“…Based on the distribution of electrons, ions and oxygen radicals in long-distance oxygen plasma [15], reactions of oxygen radicals with the PTFE surfaces will occur predominantly, but electron and ion bombardment will occur scarcely during the oxygen plasma afterglow sterilization [16]. Obtaining favorable surface properties of PTFE by long-distance oxygen plasma sterilization is prospective.…”

“…Oxidized oligomers resting on a surface provide an extremely unstable surface state because they are not permanently attached. For example, Inagaki et al 15 reported that the hydrophobic recovery of O 2 -plasma-treated polyetheretherketone (PEEK) films after washing with acetone was due to degradation products, that is, surface oligomers. Furthermore, exposure to remote O 2 plasma rather than direct O 2 plasma was more effective in minimizing hydrophobic recovery.…”

“…5 The reactor consists of a cylindrical Pyrex glass tube (45-mm diameter, 1000-mm length) and a columnar stainless steel chamber (300-mm diameter, 300-mm height). The Pyrex glass tube has two gas inlets for the injection of argon gas and a copper coil (nine turns) for the energy input RF power (13.56-MHz frequency).…”
