“…1 ''Sample B'') which reverted to (1 Â 1) during a few minutes of UHV annealing but was stable for several hours in UHV at room temperature. This reconstruction is very likely to be analogous to the td(1 Â 4) observed on MnSb(0001) in Sb-rich conditions [8] and the td(1 Â 3) seen on As-rich MnAs(0001) [29], due to chains of chemisorbed Sb(As) atoms.…”

“…This clearly indicates that the (4 Â 4) is a Ni-rich surface reconstruction. This periodicity has not been observed before on MnSb or on MnAs (0001) surfaces [8,30,29] and we will consider the reconstruction in detail in a future paper. It is useful to note that the determination of the real-space periodicity by RHEED alone is not unambiguous: the (4 Â 4) pattern is consistent with triple domain structures of both (2 Â 4) and c(4 Â 4) periodicity.…”

“…The term ideal means that the atomic composition as well as the in-plane translational symmetry of the surface are the same as bulk. Although there are experimental evidences for (2 Â 2) and (3 Â 1) reconstructions of the hexagonal MnAs(0 0 0 1) surfaces [46], we hope our calculated results in the unreconstructed (1 Â 1) geometry are helpful for (at least) qualitative understanding of the electronic and magnetic properties of the MnAs(0 0 0 1) surfaces.…”

“…MnAs [20,21] and MnSb [22,23] surfaces have been investigated by several groups, but quantitative structural information is very limited [21]. The surface electronic structure of MnSb was investigated using electron spectroscopy, but the observed surface states did not correlate with the reconstruction and theoretical predictions [24].…”
