Surgery combined with radiotherapy for the treatment of solitary plasmacytoma of the rib: a case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Solitary plasmacytoma of the bone, especially of a single rib, is a rare disease. We present the case of a 44-year-old Han Chinese man who was diagnosed with a solitary plasmacytoma of the bone located in the right sixth rib. The patient presented with a 4-year history of continuous pain in the right chest area and moderate fever lasting 7 days. A chest roentgenogram showed a solitary expanding lesion in the right thorax, and chest computed tomography revealed an osteolytic tumor in the chest wall. The patient… Show more

“…However, a few samples with solitary sternum plasmacytoma have previously received wide resection and chest wall reconstruction in clinical practice. Multiple articles present these surgical samples as case reports (21,22). Sabanathan et al (23) presented 17 SPs in the chest wall treated by radical excision, and seven of these progressed to multiple myeloma within 2 years of surgery.…”

“…If surgery is performed, it is usually before radiotherapy, and it is used to assist deterministic radiotherapy[ 1 , 27 ]. According to our literature review, costal plasmacytoma was treated with surgical resection combined with radiotherapy, and the tumor recurrence-free or remission-free duration was 6–30 mo (average 16.1 ± 8.9, median 12 mo)[ 5 , 7 , 9 , 13 - 16 , 23 , 25 ]. For patients who received only surgical resection without postoperative radiotherapy, the tumor relapse-free duration was 18 mo[ 21 , 23 ].…”

“…Given this therapy, it is known that the local recurrence rate is less than 10%, and the rate of progression to multiple myeloma in 10 years decreases to 30-50%. 6,9,18,19,20 The tumor response to radiotherapy may found in vary. In common, giving a radiation response of 93% with 62% complete response and 31% partial response.…”

“…6) Plasma cell growth in pre-radiation bone marrow examination. 3,4,5,6,9,14,21 Study of Bataline and Sony enrolling 114 solitary bone plasmacytoma cases, which stated that the patients who underwent surgery and radiotherapy had the lowest incidence of multiple myeloma in the future compared with patients who received radiotherapy or surgery alone. A study conducted by the Cancer Center of Sun Yat-Sen University of Korea also supported this statement.…”
