Surgical Resectability of Skull Base Meningiomas

Abstract: With recent advances in surgical technology such as preoperative imaging, neuro-monitoring, and surgical instruments, the surgical resectability of intracranial meningiomas has increased over the last two decades. This study reviewed clinical articles regarding the surgical treatment of meningiomas to clarify the role of surgical excision, with a focus on skull base meningiomas. We sub-classified clinical articles about skull base meningiomas into two categories (anterior and middle fossa meningiomas; and post… Show more

“…Overall, the anatomic constraints of the skull base limit GTR rates to 20 to 100% of cases, with complication rates from complete resection of 10 to 96%. 11,18,24,[29][30][31][32][33][34] These numbers may vary according to each specific region and improve according to the date of the published series. Currently, microsurgery embraces the concept of safe maximal resection, where the quality of life of the patients is prioritized.…”

“…Favorable treatment results for brain tumors, for example, meningioma have been obtained using SRS/ SRT. 4,[8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] The dedicated machines designed for effective SRS and SRT include Gammaknife, conventional linear accelerator, and Cyber-Knife, which is a compact, image-guided linear accelerator with a robotic manipulator.…”

“…The term "invasive meningioma" has usually been linked to high-grade meningiomas, aiming at the brain parenchymal infiltration by the tumor cells [14,29]. Regarding skull base invasive meningiomas, the significant scientific work was conducted to study the surgical and radiotherapeutic strategies [15,19,37,42]. A little effort was made to study the biological background of Skull Base Invasive Low-grade Meningioma (SBILM).…”
