Surgical stress and postoperative complications related to regional and radical mastectomy in dogs

Abstract: BackgroundSurgery is the treatment of choice for regional control of mammary neoplasms in female dogs. Various surgical techniques may be used, as long as mammary gland anatomy, lymphatic drainage, and known prognostic factors are respected. The purpose of this study was to compare surgical stress—including duration of surgery, nociception and hematological changes—and postoperative complications in dogs undergoing regional and unilateral radical mastectomy. Eighteen dogs were selected for each technique. Post… Show more

“…In animals subjected to surgery, the noxious stimuli caused by the procedure triggers a stress response [68] which can be used for assessment and evaluation of surgical methods and anaesthetic protocols [914]. The stress response is a physiological response to trauma or surgery and is generally considered to be proportional to the degree of surgical trauma [1518]. Physiological parameters such as heart rate and blood pressure can be used as surrogate measure of the stress response and there are studies of the perioperative surgical stress response in healthy female dogs subjected to neutering [11, 19–27].…”

“…Die Operationstechnik der Mastektomie nach Anderson und Jean (1) wurde ursprünglich als chirurgische Therapie der Gesäugeaktinomykose von Zuchtsauen beschrieben und bewährte sich zur Tumorexzision am Gesäuge in diesem Fall. Diese Methode ähnelt sehr der regionalen Mastektomie des Hundes (13). Durch die Kombination einer Allgemein-und Lokalanästhesie sowie intravenöser Nachdosierung von Ketamin war während der ca.…”

“…The stress reaction induced by surgery is generally proportional to the degree of tissue trauma ( Marana et al 2003, Chernow et al1987, Horta et al 2015. Postoperative stress and pain intensity can also be affected by other factors such as surgical skill and techniques, analgesic protocol, and complications (Michelsen et al 2012, Devitt at al.…”
