Surgical treatment of compression of the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve

Abstract: We describe an operation to relieve compression of the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve at the elbow. Between 1987 and 1997 we operated on seven patients, one with bilateral compression. In two the compression was associated with injury to biceps. A longitudinal or a transverse incision was carried out and the nerve was released from the deep fascia. Partial excision of the biceps aponeurosis was undertaken in the patients who did not have injury to biceps; some additional procedures were required for thos… Show more

“…People who are accused of malingering in military settings should be examined carefully concerning the training-related injuries of the peripheral nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Although many nerve compression syndromes in the upper limb are common, some are rare, posing difficulties in both diagnosis and treatment (6). This report describes the clinical and electrodiagnostic findings of a patient who developed LACN neuropathy, after sustaining elbow flexion and extension during sports training in the military camp.…”

“…It innervates the volar, radial and dorsal aspects of the distal forearm and proximal wrist (6). Musculocutaneous neuropathy with weakness of the biceps muscle and a sensory deficit in the distribution of the LACN has been reported following prolonged repetitive forceful contracture of flexor musculature of the upper extremity (7,8).…”

“…Diagnostic anesthetic nerve block was also successfully performed in 23 patients in a study by Naam et al in 2004 [10]. Two patients in a case series by Dailiana et al [2] were diagnosed solely with local anesthetic nerve block. Our case is the first reported case in which ultrasound was used to locate the nerve prior to injection of medication.…”

“…In a surgical case series by Dailiana et al [2] in 9 patients with LABCN compression at the elbow, 2 patients responded to conservative management consisting of immobilization, while 7 underwent surgical treatment, with 6 of the 7 patients receiving full relief. In a study by Naam et al [10], 16 patients with LABCN compression underwent surgical decompression after conservative treatment failed.…”
