Surgical treatment strategies for invasive thymoma

Abstract: A thymoma is a common anterior thymus mediastinal tumor composed of atypical epithelial tumor cells, though the morbidity rate is lower as compared to other types of thoracic malignancy such as lung cancer and lung metastasis from another primary cancer. As a result, clinical data regarding thymomas have not been well discussed as compared to those of other carcinomas. Also, because of the low morbidity rate and insufficient clinical experience, oncological characteristics and clinical treatment options are po… Show more

“…To ensure that all lesions are resected, median sternotomy is generally chosen for invasive thymoma [ 18 ]. We gathered the data of combined thoracotomy as well, from which it could be found that the average size of the mediastinal lesions was 79.91 ± 26.99 mm, and almost all of them (84.8%) had invaded the surrounding lung tissues (Fig.…”

“…Approximately 30% of thymomas are invasive, mainly invading adjacent organs such as the lungs, pleura, and pericardium. There have been few reports of transvenous cardiac metastasis, and thymoma of intracardiac origin is exceptionally rare [1]. Most previously reported int- racardiac thymomas originated in the right atrium and extended to the vena cava.…”
