Survey on anthelmintic resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes in unorganized goat farms of Tamil Nadu

Abstract: One of the major problems in small ruminant farms is emergence of anthelmintic resistance (AR) to commonly used dewormers. This study investigated AR to gastrointestinal nematodes affecting goats in 27 unorganized farms in three different agro-climatic zones (Cauvery delta zone, high altitude zone and high rainfall zone) of Tamil Nadu, India. Two anthelmintics viz., albendazole (AZ) and levamisole (LEV) were used in this study as per the dose recommended by the manufacturer. Status of AR was detected by using … Show more

“…Very close are results of a recent Slovakian study [15]. Many studies have demonstrated the existence of AR to the main anthelmintic classes in goat herds outside of Europe, namely in the United States [11,16], Cuba [17], Kenya [18], South Africa [19], Uganda [20], Ethiopia [21], Malaysia [22,23], India [24][25][26], and Pakistan [27].…”

“…The odds ratio for relative risk of getting H. contortus egg was 0.133 (0.07-25; 95% CI) after treatment with IVM as compared to control. In other studies, benzimidazole-resistant H. contortus (Jeyathilakan et al 2003) and multiple anthelmintic resistances in H. contortus against benzimidazole and LEV (Godara et al 2011;Jaiswal et al 2013;Manikkavasagan et al 2013) were documented. However, faecal cultures from IVM-treated group revealed significantly high (69%) number of Trichostrongylus species, which was having meagre (5%) presence before treatment.…”

“…Several cases of benzimidazole group drug resistance have been reported in goats (Chartier et al 2001;Jaiswal et al 2013). Levamisole has also been reported to be losing its efficacy in caprine species during recent years particularly in Indian sub-continent (Godara et al 2011;Manikkavasagan et al 2013;Jaiswal et al 2013). Suspicions of IVM resistance, however, are less commonly documented in India and world (Paraud et al 2010;Jaiswal et al 2013).…”

“…Our observations are in line with the findings of Sharma et al (2015) who reported 57.44% and 70.87% FECR percentage on 7 th and 14 th day post treatment, respectively against H. contortus in goats of Jammu region. There are many reports regarding BZ resistance in goats against GINs from others parts of the country like Uppal et al (1992) ; Ram et al (2007) ; Godara et al (2011) ; Manikkavasagan et al (2015) . The anthelmintic resistance survey of Chandra et al (2015) indicated that the status of BZ resistance is in alarming conditions in all parts of the Uttar Pradesh, India.…”
