Survey on the presence of antibiotic residues in raw milk samples from six sites of the dairy pool of Niamey, Niger

Abstract: Background and Aim: Antibiotics are widely used in animal production for treating the diseases and for preventing or increasing animal growth. The presence of antibiotic residues in milk is a public health problem. The aim of this study was to assess the use of antibiotic residues in raw milk from the dairy pool of Niamey in three farms (Toukounous, Kirkissoye, and Niamey) and three collection centers (Hamdallaye, Kollo, and Say). Materials and Methods: A direct interview (questionnaire) was used to collect d… Show more

“…These two behaviours were reported by the majority of the dairy farmers surveyed. In Benin and in West Africa, several studies showed that milk usually contains antibiotic residues, particularly tetracyclines, beta-lactams, aminoglycosides, penicillin, sulphonamides, and macrolides ( Madougou et al., 2019 ; Mensah et al. 2014b , 2019 ; Oluwafemi et al., 2018 ; Olatoye et al., 2016 ; Bagré et al., 2015 ; Addo et al., 2011 ).…”

“…In addition to human health effects, the technological impact in the dairy sector must also be considered, since antimicrobial drugs can interfere with the production of dairy products, decreasing acid formation, reducing milk curdling and cause improper ripening of cheeses (Chiesa et al, 2020), resulting in financial losses in the dairy industry (Pogurschi et al, 2015). Antibiotic residues in animal products are also a factor of environmental and water pollution (Madougou et al, 2019). These reasons make milk containing antibiotic residues a harmful food whose sale is prohibited under Algerian law.…”
